You may have heard that you should avoid chewing sugary gum to prevent cavities, so you pop a mint into your mouth, instead. Unfortunately, this could also be harming your teeth. There are other options, like sugar-free gum, that can take care of stinky breath without the risk. Keep reading to learn more!

What is The Problem with Mints?

It may come as a surprise to learn that mints can be bad for your oral well-being. The sad truth is that they contain sugar which attracts unwanted bacteria that contributes to tooth decay. Some brands have the same amount of this sweet ingredient as candy, making it an unhealthy choice.

Furthermore, many mints are hard and can chip your teeth or dislodge fillings or dental crowns if you bite into them. When you need something to spruce up your breath, choose sugar-free gum, instead.

What is Sugar-Free Gum?

Sugar-free gum is just what it sounds like. It’s gum that’s sweetened with another ingredient, often Xylitol, instead of sugar. That means it won’t attract toxic microbes or encourage plaque growth like mints do. It can refresh your mouth without the same undesirable consequences.

What Are the Benefits of Sugar-Free Gum?

There are a few other reasons you might want to consider unwrapping a stick of sugar-free gum after your next meal. Some additional benefits include:

Neutralizing acids. Many foods and drinks are acidic and slowly erode the hard enamel of your pearly whites which makes them more vulnerable. Chewing sugar-free gum produces saliva which neutralizes the pH balance in your mouth to prevent this.

Avoiding dry mouth. Germs love to flourish in dry places, and your mouth can become a breeding ground which leads to unpleasant smells. When you chew sugar-free gum, you create more spit to flush your mouth.

Replacing mineral content. The sweetener in sugar-free gum, Xylitol, is found in certain berries, fruits, vegetables, and birch bark. It’s a natural ingredient known to reduce tooth decay while restoring minerals to your enamel so that it stays strong.

Does It Matter How Long I Chew Sugar-Free Gum?

While there are many advantages to enjoying a piece of sugar-free gum, it is possible to overdo it. Frequent noshing puts added pressure on your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that connects your jaw to your skull. Over time, it can become inflamed and cause aches and a locked jaw. Studies have shown that it takes an hour for your enamel to replace the minerals lost while eating but chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes can speed up that process. By limiting the time that you’re actively working your jaw, you can avoid potential TMJ problems.

Now you know how to safely rejuvenate your breath the next time you’re worried it might be an issue!

About the Practice

At Oakton Dentistry by Design, patients of all ages benefit from two dental experts who provide a full array of services to meet your oral healthcare needs.
