This is a temporary problem that will eventually go away on its own, but having a firm idea of what to expect can help make the first couple of weeks go by more smoothly. Here’s a closer look at how Invisalign can affect your speech and what you can do about it.

How Does Invisalign Work?

The Invisalign process involves a series of clear aligners that exert pressure on your teeth to gradually reposition them. You will need to keep the aligners in your mouth for 20 to 22 hours every day so that they can do their job. Roughly every two weeks, you will switch to a new set of aligners. Once you’ve completed your Invisalign treatment – which often takes about 12 to 18 months – you’ll have a straighter smile to show off to the world.

What Speech Problems Can Occur When Wearing Invisalign?

The presence of Invisalign aligners over your teeth will affect the way your tongue moves when you’re trying to speak. Consequently, you may experience a slight lisp when saying words that contain the “s” and “z” sounds. Additionally, you might find yourself speaking slowly and slurring your words due to how different your mouth feels.

Over time, your tongue will learn to account for your aligners. As a result, any speech issues should fade away on their own. Note that once you switch to the next set of aligners, you may experience a lisp again; however, it likely won’t take as much time for your mouth to readjust.

How Can You Overcome Invisalign-Related Speech Problems Faster?

If you want to speed up the process of adjusting to your aligners so that any related speech problems go away faster, try following these tips:

Read aloud to give yourself practice speaking with Invisalign. Take note of any words or passages that you find challenging and try repeating them.

Record yourself when you practice talking. You can play back the recording and figure out which words and phrases you’re having the most trouble with, thus giving you a clearer idea of what to work on.

Don’t force yourself to rush through your speech. Maintain a slow, relaxed pace that makes it easier to pronounce your words correctly.

Pay attention to your posture. Standing up straight can help encourage better speech because it makes it easier for air to flow properly through the larynx.

Bear in mind that everyone adjusts to Invisalign at their own pace. Some people get used to talking with their new aligners relatively quickly, but others might need a few weeks before they truly feel comfortable speaking with them. As long as you wear your aligners every day and give yourself plenty of opportunities to practice talking, it won’t be too long before you’re able to move past any speech issues, allowing you to communicate clearly and confidently with others again.

About the Author

Dr. Pasquale J.
