In many cases, the underlying of cause of TMJ/TMD is uneven or excessive pressure on these joints during speech, chewing, yawing, and other activities. Equilibration seeks to realign patients’ bite through physical therapy, orthodontics, oral surgery, or other means in order to relieve TMJ/TMD pain and prevent future concerns. We use our state-of-the-art ConeBeam scanner to fully understand the inner workings of patients’ smiles, and make treatment recommendations that will restore the full function of patients’ TMJ in the most effective and conservative way possible.
Oral appliance therapy is one of the most frequently recommended treatments for TMJ/TMD. We custom craft occlusal splints that patients wear during sleep. At night, patients may be unconsciously clenching their jaws or engaging in unnecessary movement that strains the jaw joints. Occlusal splints allow the jaw to rest comfortably in the ideal position preventing potentially damaging teeth grinding and clenching at night and reducing discomfort during the day. These comfortable oral appliances are often adequate to restore oral health for TMJ/TMD sufferers.
