Do I Really Need to Wear Temporary Veneers?

If you’re interested in getting porcelain veneers to enhance your smile aesthetics, you might’ve stumbled across something called “temporary veneers.” Instead of receiving a fully customized set straightaway, you’ll have to wear this more standardized set for about two weeks. Why is this, and is it really necessary? Keep reading to find out!

The Porcelain Veneer Process

The importance of temporary veneers is tied to the treatment process. After discussing your smile goals and taking impressions of your mouth, your dentist will need to prepare your teeth so that the veneers will adhere properly to the surface without looking too bulky. The prep-work primarily involves removing a tiny sliver of your natural enamel, which is the outermost layer of your teeth’s structure.

Protecting Your Teeth

Enamel helps shield the more sensitive layers of your teeth from external stimulation and bacteria. Your permanent veneers will ultimately replace the enamel removed as an effective shield, to the point where veneers are not associated with an increased risk of oral health conditions. But you will need suitable protection for your teeth while your permanent veneers are being customized.

That’s where temporary veneers come in! Though they’re not as durable and won’t be as nice as your permanent set, they will help prevent sensitivity and cavities.

Customizing Your Permanent Veneers

Most dentists work with local dental lab technicians to create custom veneers. They send the impressions taken during the consultation to the technicians, who will use the measurements to carve out porcelain shells that will fit well to your teeth. The whole process takes roughly two weeks. Once your dentist receives your fully-customized veneers from the lab technicians, they’ll call you back to their office to swap them out with your temporary set.

Overall, temporary veneers really are necessary! They’ll be the first line of defense for your teeth while the “final draft” is being crafted. Since they’re not quite as durable as permanent veneers, it’s best to avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods when wearing temporary veneers. After your dentist makes the swap, you’ll be able to enjoy your normal diet and your new smile!
